Condenser?

Hi, Are you guys running a condenser (0.2uF cap) between coil +ve and GND? I have the "forum" amp module. Should I be running a condenser as well? A quick goggle reveals that there may be benefits even on a non points system? What do you guys run?

I certainly wouldn't fit one to a non-points system.
If it offered any benefit, you can be sure that Rover would have fitted them.

I think (but not 100% sure) that Rover did fit a condenser with the Opus system and that was a non-points system.

Hello Will, This is the generic Ignition circuit diagram for the Rover SD1 Efi V8 also fitted to many other Rover V8 vehicles of the period.

Image

Where the amplifier/ign module is mounted on the dissy, the condenser is fitted from Coil positive to local ground. Usually, but not always, the condenser has an integral earthing/fixing spade and a flying lucar connection to connect to the coil.

When the amplifier is inside the ali box mounted behind the coil the condenser is fitted inside the box, along with the 6800 ohm trigger resistor.

General concensus and perceived wisdom says that the purpose of the condenser is radio frequency interference suppression, for in car entertainment and neighbourhoodl TV/Radio, etc.

However, some say there is an additional benefit in preventing 'Back EMF' spikes from upsetting ECU/Efi circuits. Who knows?

Either way, its purpose is not the same as those fitted to 'points' ignition systems.

Given the choice, I'd fit the condenser.

The capacitor on a points system sits across the points - and has a different purpose to one from the positive to ground, which can also be fitted to points systems or electronic. The main purpose of this is to reduce RFI. Not only for your own car ICE if fitted, but could help prevent spikes getting to the ECU. EDIS systems are fitted with one per coil pack.

Ah yes, subtle distinction I missed! I agree with other posters.
