I have just done the exact same job. Are you changing the bearings as well? If you change the pinion and crown wheel to a different case then you should also adjust the pinion height which is very difficult! much easier to keep the gears in the same original case then you can get away without doing this difficult job with. Have you undone the pinion nut yet? you'll also need another special tool. i made one cutting a 12 point socket in half a welding a bracket on.

Pinion depth is absolutely critical, and a nightmare to get right.SuperV8 wrote:I have just done the exact same job. Are you changing the bearings as well? As he says, at all costs leave the pinion installed in its original casing unless you have damn good reason to remove it.

Well i managed to get the other bearing housing off so i could remove the lsd from inside, the plan is i have a 3.38 granada diff so i am going to install the lsd into this after i change the crown wheels over, but what a b-stard of a job,and yes i will be changing the bearings and oil seals i've left the pinion nut on as i only needed the lsd from it thank god coz i wouldn't know where to start to undo that as you need to somehow lock it before you can even attempt to undo the star shaped nut.the reason i'm changing the diff ratio is i have a 3.62 diff in my cobra and a 4.0 rv8 so the 3.38 should drop the revs a bit and also first gear is pretty much useless.SuperV8 wrote:I have just done the exact same job. It is a job requiring patience and engineering blue (messy) and is tricky to say the least. I would recommend finding someone who has done it many times before to help or send it off to a reconditioners to do it for you.
Best regards
Mike

poppet valves rule!
It will be a lot easyer not to take the pinion out but I had to as the pinoin bearing was knackered.
Have a look at the link. There are a few photos of my diff rebuild, night be of some help:

The roll pin for the open diff is longer than the roll pin for the lsd diff. You only need to remove it if you are changing the sun/star gears. (Only two of the gears I think are interchangable between lsd and open). IIRC the roll pin just needs drifting down so then you can tap the axle out, I remember drifting the lsd roll pin down and having a small panic thinking that I would then have to dismantle the lsd to retrive the roll pin. That is why I started taking the lsd appart, got half way then had an epiphany, I think the roll pin was retrivable, I forget how but definatley not through the lsd plates although it was very interesting looking inside one

Thanks for the reply, yes i need to swap over 2 0f the star gears as there badly pitted[the small ones on the axle that the roll pin holds]so your saying drift the roll pin down on the lsd where does it go i don't really want to split the lsd.i will pm you again.SuperV8 wrote:The roll pin for the open diff is longer than the roll pin for the lsd diff. PM sent.
The roll pin just needs to be tapped down, then you can tap out the axle. I think the roll pin will come back out the way it came if you turn the diff upside down.
My planet gears were also worn and pitted, I guess from the action of the LSD because the open dif gears were fine.
