The received wisdom is that my 1991 heads should have the flat washer type of valve-stem seals, the 'top hat' seals only being appropriate for post '94 engines, or if I retrofitted the post '94 valve guides. The flat washer seals do fit. I have tried the post '94 top-hat type and they don't fit. Is there a third type??

The engine was fitted with top-hat type seals that were slightly larger than the post '94 ones – does anyone know where I might find some replacements? I don't think much of the flat washers and wonder whether the type that were fitted were part of a conversion to unleaded?

I dont think there are 2 types of "blue push on seal" as I call them.But I'm probably wqrong
I had washer type on my early had. I took the heads to John Eales and it was about £60 to have the guides machined to take the later seals without having to repalce the guides. I'm pretty sure most Rover V8 workshops will be able to re work the existing valve guides to take the modern seals. They are much much better than the washer type.

Now that you've taken the advice from that WEIRDO in Thatcham perhaps you will take my advice and get hold of some Opel Manta CIH (1.9/2.0)valve stem seals.
They will sit down over the tops of the bosses and seal up a treat.
It is true that I live down in Devon but I don't drive a tractor and I don't have six fingers with webs in between

Do those just push over the old style valve guides that were used with the rubber washers?
If they do it will save me some money on other builds

I used cometic 3068V1 on old TVR guides rather than have the tops reworked. They have nice viton seals. Can't see why they wouldn't fit early heads, TVR guides are their own though (0.625" IIRC & double springs).

Mainly because the bloody tap washer efforts looked so crap

To be fair, I'd be good at banjo-playing if I had one finger per banjo string (plus one spare with which to pick my nose).

A bit tricky to track down, but I found some in the end. Elvis Presley had lent them to the Loch Ness Monster to help put a bus on the moon, but once I knew that they were easy to get hold of!

Where did you eventually track the Manta seals down ?

I got them via enginestuff.co.uk - they initially said they couldn't get hold of them, but dug some up from a garage in Cornwall for me!

Worth a try - hope I didn't get the last ones!

Well, I've been having difficulty getting hold of these from the net, but the guys on the Ascona/Manta forum have given me a part number so you can now walk in to a motor factors and say: I would like some valve stem seals, the Payen number is HR 336 and it's a pack of 4, so could I have 4 packs please!!
