Tremec T5 tail housing roll pin mistake!!

I have a Tremec T5 (out of a tvr) I need to extend to gear lever position back 150mm. While investigating different options, my idea was to extend the shifter shaft so I tried to removed the offset lever. I drifted the roll pin down in an effort to remove the offset lever, but couldn't remove it!

Now i'm stuck, reading the rebuild manual (after having a tinker  ) it says yo need to remove the offset lever WITH the tail housing. This would aoviously be an engine box out job!!

Does anyone know a way/ technique to retrieve roll pins when tapped down? I tried drilling it but it just turns and there's now way to hold it.

I have a feeling i'll need to pull the engine out, any thoughts much appreciated

Hi Tom
Is there any way that you can heat the housing to expand the metal around the pin so that it would fall out with a gentle tap?
Failing that can you drift a small drill bit into the roll pin thus forcing out the sides so that it stays put.
If you could do this then you could drill it out that way.
The last option could be to use a dremel and grind the little bugger out.
Am not familiar with the Tremec box but there must be a way without pulling the whole lot.
cheers

This shows the gearbox tail housing in the car.

The red arrow points to the dowl pin hole in the offset lever.

I did manage to drift the pin down but that is now the problem. I think it is catching underneath on the indents. The manual says to drift the roll pin down, (which i've done) then remove the offset lever WITH the tail housing.

Unless I can get the dowl pin out, by some how pulling it up or driling is I think I will have to take the engine/ box out, to remove the tail housing from the gearbox along with the offset lever to then re-build and re-fit the dowl pin!

Might teach me RTFM first!

I would say that the dremel is the way to go now with this.
If needed I can supply you with a teardrop carbide burr which would go through the pin easily.
Let me know if this is of any help.

Do you have access to a stick welder or tig? You could try sticking a rod/tungsten right on the end of the pin from the top, then warm up the surrounding bit and try pulling it out. If it was a really tight push out though it won't work. Or if its a hollow roll pin you could try winding a screw or something in and pulling it out with a bar/claw hammer- though the pins are normally really hard.

Cheers for the advice guys.

I'll have a play tonight but I have a feeling i'll need to get the engine out.

It might make doing the gear lever extension easier?

looking at that, I would guess the tal housing needs releasing from the box, pulling back, that will probably give you the underside clearance you require

Yes, I think the tail housing AND the offset leaver need to come off and go on together.

Tomorrow evening i'll get the engine/ box out and have a tinker (which is what got me in this mess  )

It will mean I can neatly weld a 6" extension on which is a positive.

Well engine's out, Quite daunting at this height!

This shows the reasom the offset lever can't slide off the selector rod.

Note to self:
Don't drift a roll pin without being 100% as to where its going!!!!

Atleast i'll be able to neatly weld an extension on.
