Crank, alternator assembly identification

Hi Guys

I'm currently building a Dax rush kit car which has the efi 3.5 V8 engine from a range rover, I’m having problems finding an assembly, bracket at the front to get my water pump and alternator (will need nice small alternator to) connected.

Have seen people mentioning different lengths in crank long and short and also read somewhere that it depends on the water pump distance from the engine :?

Can anyone help identify the parts, brackets, etc I need to get both water pump and alternator connected.

Pics below to try and help explain what I’m talking about....

By the looks of your chassis your going to have to mount the alternator off the drivers side head. None of the 4x4 engines had this arangement, they are mostly on the other side and lower down. None of the 2wd brackets will be the right length for you. If your handy with a welder I would just make up a bracket that mounts on the 3 bolt holes on the head and hangs your alternator from it. SD1 style would probably be best for belt wrap but you might get away with P6 style too.
The pump and pulleys are Range Rover by the way, exactly which one I don't know.

Bellow is a P6 bracket which you could easy make out of steel and space it where you need.

Pilgrim supply this bracket for their cobra kits (RV8). I'll try & find a better picture. fits the alternator higher on the driver's side.Image Image

Early V8 rangerovers (pre-EFI) and landrovers all have the alternator mounted on the right, as per your picture Katanaman, and that's what your bracket looks like to me.

No might look the same but that's definitely a P6 one, 4x4 stuff sits further out. I took it out a P6 along with pump and crank pulley.

The landrover bracket is different from the P6 one. Not interchangable, as the pulley spacing is different.

Now i'm just confused - From looking at my photo's would you say i need to change the water pump to a P6 type?
Then get the P6 bracket?

No, because then nothing will line up with your crank pulley.

The P6 belt runs in a V machined into the TV damper outer ring.

All the LR alternator brackets mount the alternator high above the cam cover on either side depending on application - this is to meet wade requirements and keep the alt dry.

Your best bet, especially if you're looking to fit one of the tiny japanese alternators (ie Bedford Rascal), is to stick with the matching pair of pulleys you have and manufacture a suitable bracket to fit with the alternator mocked up in position.

As russell said no plus P6 pump wont fit your front cover so you would have to change that too. I had to use P6 stuff as I have a steering rack about 10mm in front of the crank pulley. Also don't see why you have to use a small alternator. My one is a standard Range rover alternator and if you can use it spaced that far back then you should easy be able to use a standard V belt alternator.

Thank you all - The only reason i wanted a small alternator was the clearance I’ll have at the top is minimal, it'll be touching the bonnet in my dax rush, someone has mounted as described but upside down which solved the problem or I could look at doing it like John says.

I'll give it a go within next week or so and see how it goes.

Cheers

If you are really stuck for space, an old trick uses to be mount a pulley on the prop /diff flange and bolt the alternator to the diff, although you are not charging while stationary, it has worked for loads of people.

If you want to take the easy and quick route but not the cheapest then get the alternator bracketry from Westfield. About £70 quid but for that you get the bracket & adjustor which are powdered coated also, bolts, washers, nuts and a Serpentine belt which is the right length. I do not think it is bad price now I have listed whats in the kit.
