Hi all, what are the rules about getting gas bottles for migging??. as weve been using the small bottles from halfords and they dont last long,do you need to have a company address or anything, all advice welcome rich

I use my local BOC depot for gas.
You can go in and open an account easily.They do an Argosheild mix for about £70 in a Y coded bottle and this will last at least 12 months.
Yellow pages will give you a local supplier.

Rich, if you can find an argoshield bottle you might be able to pay for full ones from a blacksmiths or somewhere ( ) which is a lot cheaper than going to BOC or Air Products (but might be classed as a bit naughty and I have a feeling BOC are scheming a plan to make this impossible with barcodes or something...)

we have got a empty bottle, but its about 5ft tall, not a BOC one though, to start an account at BOC what is needed and is there a monthly rental thing?? rich

Yep, rental... if you can get around it then you may as well, do you know what make it is?

Local tool hire place to me does pub bottles of CO2 for £18 exchange.
I've never had any trouble using CO2 as a shield and it's nice and cheap

CO2 is fine for mild steel welding but Argoshield is better. To weld stainless you need to go to Argoshield and for alloy you need pure Argon. The bottle rental unfortunately is the most expensive part

All you need to open account is a utility bill and £72.00 and away you go.
Co2 is okay but as mentioned Argoshield is much better.

While doing the major work on my challenge truck, I was getting argoshield lite from my local BOC agent - no problems with a private account, and much cheaper than the small bottles from the motorfactors. It's best to take the bottles back as soon as you've finished the project you're doing though as the bottle rent will keep building up otherwise

Rent on a BOC Argoshield light bottle is about £70 a year, which is pricey if you only use Mig occasionally. Refills aren't too expensive though.

Adams Gas do rent free, delivered anywhere. I've got one an argon mix one, and a pub bottle lined up with friendly pub CO2 refills for a pittance.
Round here some of the engineering places also seem to flog gas, whether they're just BOC or Air Liquide agents etc I don't know.

Never knew such people existed - I'm paying about £80 rental a year on a big bottle of argon for the TIG.

I run C02 on the mig - which is fine.

That's them, the first bottle cost me £100 inc £40 deposit.
