Camshaft Degreeing Help Please!

Hi All
I'm a little confused with setting up the crank and cam timing. I have a rover v8 with a piper 270 cam. I have fitted the cam and sprockets and set the sprocket alignment marks to face each other. Standing at the front of the engine:
Can I confirm number one piston is the the closest one on the left hand side?
Can I confirm the lifter where I want to set the DTI on is the closest one on the left hand side?
I have put what I believe to be number one piston to TDC using a piston stop and then aligning a fixed pointer to 0 dgrees on the protractor attached to the crank.
I had a quick play last night and found that the lifter reached max lift at 333 degrees and started to drop at 226 (I may have got the numbers the wrong way I round I'm writing this from memory). The spec sheet says max lift should be at 108 degrees ATDC. The figures I've got are not in the same ball park!
Am I doing something wrong?
If it turns out that I am fairly correct and a few degrees out, how do i adjust the vernier sprocket after I have loosened the three allen key screws? surely this would only take up any slack in the chain because you would moving one sprocket and not the other.
Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Simeon
