Hi,
I've got a 1973 302 windsor (which currently has an externally balanced flexplate) that i'm converting to a manual T5 box. I noticed you can get flywheels with 28oz and 50oz external balance weights, am i right in thinking it was only early 80's onwards that used the 50oz balanced flywheels?
Going to states next week and would love to pic up a steel flywheel while i'm there, bring it back as "second hand car parts" etc

Your engine may have been rebuilt at some stage in it's life and because of this any factory standard may / may not of been adhered to.
You could take your existing flywheel to a machine shop and get them to confirm the weight on it (imbalance) - or again you could buy a zero balance unit and have it balanced with your whole rotating mass which is the better way of doing it.
Would I take a punt? Probably not as the wrong flywheel will wreck your engine (and box) rather quickly)
If you do decise to get the whole lot rebalance I would suggest going for a zero internal imbalance - after that any zero flywheel would work
