I can get a sharp picture on beeb 2 but they all have really bad snow or white tadpoles. can anyone help me? Its doing my head in!!!!!

Regret but they're usually a POS unless you live next to the transmitter. The fact that it's boosted doesn't help if it's a poor aerial and they usually are.

my nearest transmitter is 30 kms away, so not too far. I have a decent phillips aerial at home that i may be able to, er, borrow. this is really annoying. I am tempted to just install an outdoor aerial next to my window

Outdoor aerials are best. Max. height, lots of elements and alignment are also good. If you're going to do this yourself a signal strength meter will help setup.

Hi
Make sure you have the right band airial for the transmitter you are pointing at (the airial supplyer should be able to tell you this, if they can't or look confused go to another shop). If the one you can "borrow" is for another transmitter it will be no good for the new site. To recieve the digital services in nearly all areas you will need an "extended band" airial. at 30km from the transmitter, provided you are not behind a hill or a wood og a large city you should be ok without any amplifier or booster, and again unless there is a targe object (eg hill) in the way then you shouldn't need to mount the airial above roof hight. Try a look at the freeview website (if you haven't already) it will tell you which airial is best for your post code if you want the freeview services.
Good Luck
Mike
