Happy New Year Folks :D :D :D

I have a new Mallory twin point dizzy and have booked my car in to be tuned / set-up.
The engineer recommended that I up grade from the twin points to the optical Mallory upgrade. I have since found out that this upgrade would mean losing the vacuum advance option. I do not want to do this.
I have been now been recommended to add a power amp instead. :?:

Do you Guys agree this Power Amp would be a good idea, as although it costs about £140 I have been having trouble starting.
(The starting problems I hope will be greatly helped when I get the carb set up correctly)

Regards
Dave

Just had an update on the optical system.
Mallory have brought out a kit to upgrade the dizzy keeping the vacuum advance unit. It will be available March.

I have been told by a friend to stay with the points but I am trying to get an upgrade kit from the States.

I never found the mallory dual point dizzy's particulary good. They are better made than say a lucas unit - but that's about the only good point (excuse the pun)
I always had to carry a spare condensor around with me - and considering how few miles i covered - i had to change the points several times (had one on a rover and also when my chevy was points).

Funny thing when out with the dakar owners club - and i had long since ditched mallory in favor of megasquirt - a fellow owners dakar started acting up, soon as i saw the mallory i said 'i bet your condensor has gone' - i still had my spare one in the glovebox - so we fitted it and it was right again.

I believe they have had problems with the grounding of the condensors.
I have spare points but no spare condenser.
Thanks for the tip :D

I`m running my engine with a dual point Mallry too, and my idea was to upgrade it with the petronix kit.
But can one keep the vac advance with this kit?

I have just bought one from the states, delivered for $139. ( carshopinc.com) :D
This keeps the vac unit. My dizzy is DIST,BUICK V8 215-350 DP VA
I believe Mallory have just released a module for the vac dizzy but it is not available for 2 months.

I got my Mallory RV8 dissy from Real Steel last year with a vac module and magnetic pick up. I have hooked this up to the MSD 6AL ignition module with a Blaster 2 coil and the spiral leads. It's a pretty bullet proof system with the best spark you could wish for.

I wish I had bought a electronic one initially.
I spoke to Real Steel last week and they told me they will receive the electronic upgrade kit in March.
I could not wait so I bought from the states myself.

yes,you strip out the 2 sets of points and replace with the pertronix module

I am told the upgrade is very easy.
Replace points base with new base + pickup.
3 wires, +ve, ground and coil.
I was told you do not even have to redo the timing! :?:
