What's it worth?

Post by Ian Anderson »

I've been offered a Ford 302 (5 litre lump)
Full from sump to carb, starter, alt and water pump along with a bellhousing to fit the GT40

So I'm thinking
what is my motor worth?
Anyone interested?
It would be
Rover3.9 (Morgan number)
Bought new in 1990 (About £4000)
Then shipped to John Eales who did a load of work (About another £4000)
It was balanced, heads ported largest valves fitted, JE102 cam vernier sprockets, pocketed pistons, and run and dynoed by JE.
I have all paperwork to confirm what was done.
I got it running in 2006 and have now done 3200 miles on it
It was at the rollong road day and I posted up the numbers
I also just did the RWYB day and posted the results
It is running a P6 pump (replaced in July as the seal had gone on the other one)
It has Hotwire injection and would come with 2 ECUs - one standard and one reworked by John Eales
Oh and the starter would go with it as it would not work on the Ford lump

So what's it worth?
Anyone interested?

Ian

So basicly what you tell us , selling your RV8 and fitting this Ford 302 is a step backwards by the means of performance and handling.

Why trade a good, properly tuned and light weight alloy engine for a heavy cast iron, I guess not modifiet yet 302 engine.......or it must be a healthy 350hp Ford Motorsport engine but this wont still be an improvemend. In dragrace terms: 100 kilogram equals 50 horsepower.....

The only interesting part is the bellhousing   with this you can fit the FE engine by retro means. But this is even more heavier.

Well it is supposedly a "Ford" GT40

So go tet it more accurate I was thinking og getting the old iron in the boot! That along with a dirty great big carb on top. Just checking on the block date - so I hopefully do not to worry about emissions. Tuning amounts to pouring in more petrol instead of fiddling with resistors etc!

as you say 300 - 350hp which is more than the Rover unit by about 50-100 and on the weight front - I could always use some serious laxatives!

I'm really just kicking the idea around and wanting to see if it is feasioble without a huge outlay.

Now a FE sideoiler 7 litre, full crossover - to me that sounds like a broken gearbox and needs one currently running at USD25000 to hold the torque! It would have to be T44. Even the new Quaife ZFQ would not handle the torque!

Then you'l'should have an engine block with the size of a GT 40 engine.
A Rover V8 is almost as wide as a Ford 335 series ( Cleveland/ Modifiet and 400) and the FE series. The Winsor family looks like a Cologne V6 in a GT40 so tall  .

About the Rover engine. There was a time that Ford owned Rover and his engine plant.

I'll get your drift here so I am making a bit fun and see how this discusion heads on...............

Btw how much horsies or torque can this Renault transaxle handle. Cause I am having some wild dreams with building a GT some time my self round a Ford 400 V8 & 8-71.......................

Ian why worry about the block date?
The emmissions are based on the vehicle age after it's been SVA'd and registered. When I changed my Cobra replica from a 2.8 v6 to an RV8 3.5, the levels for the MOT were the same.

If the engine block is in the 70's date range it is visible smoke only and that is soooo easy to pass.

The car is registered in 2006 so it should be on cats etc.

But at SVA I could prove the Rover block was built in 190 so get 1990 emissions on it.

So if the engine is newer than 1990 I have to meet the emissions as at the engine date. (Test is based on age of car or engine - whichever is older)

so hence needing specifics on the engine age

""(Test is based on age of car or engine - whichever is older)""

Thats good for me Ian. A 1996 engine in a 1975 car....And the only visible smoke is from the rear tyres on mine :)

I've not heard that before. I guess you got a 2006 registration and not an age related one. My car's registered as 1983 the same as the donor, not visual only but not too hard either.
If i was to build another car it would be a GT40 lovely looking bits of kit, i'd just need a wider garage.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
