Hi,
This may be a stupid question but here goes.
I have a hotrod running a P5/6 Rover V8 with SD1 head and a 4 barrel Holley carb.
It is using a 4 speed Rover box running to a Scimitar LSD axle.
Lying in my drive I happen to have amongst other bits a 3.9 Range Rover (like you do).
Now can anybody tell me if the 5 speed box (from the Rangey), with the 4wd transfer box removed, can be used to replace the 4 speed on the hotrod - maybe using the original bellhousing etc?

Also/or can anyone tell me what size wheels & tyres & diff ratio were used on the original rover as I am trying to work out what size radials (as a longer road trip / rain option - currently on 8.60 crossplies 15" rims which is a bit tall on the gearing and a bit lively in the wet!) will give me a similar gearing to the original with this set up.

First question - I may as well make it an involved one...ha

It would be far easier to hold out for a SDi box, as you will need LOTS of bits from a SDi box to make the RR box RWD,

I figured that it would be too much good luck that I had one on the drive.. ha. The four speed is ok for now but I'll keep my eye out just in case.

I am sure you are aware of it but the lt77 and r380 2wd boxes can be found in v8 daf vans (which one depends on year), and as the DAF lable does not carry the same status as SD1 they tend to be cheeper, they generally have a lower first gear though.

I didn't know that but I think it is unlikely to find one over here (Isle of Man)
My box is ok at present, it was only that I had the Range Rover one to hand and when I get a second set of rear wheels & tyres (Radials to swap with the crossplies when necessary) my gearing will drop overall so a five speed would bring it back overall, if you know what I mean.
The lower first on the truck box would be an added advantage for lighting up the tyres....ha.
Thanks for the info I will keep it incase this box gives up. It was rebuilt before I bought the car but reverse is still a bit whiney.

There were a few cars fitted with the 5 speed, Obviously the Rover SDi, the gearbox can be from any of the engine sized cars, except, possibly the poverty spec car which was the LT77 box but with 5 gear removed, Then there is the TR7, some Series 3XJ 6s, Morgans, Rover powered TVRs, then of course the good old Sherpa, Lots were fitted with the LT77 and quite a few were fitted with some peugeot box, its got to be worth a look around, Even EBay often has them for sale,

Thanks for all this info, I will make a list and leave it with my friendly scrap man in case he gets anything in. They tend to just bail everything over here and send it off on a barge for the metal etc.
