Balance gauge

Hello all

Having just rebuilt the carbs for my range rover the next step is to tune it up.

I have two HIF6 (originally from a p6 i expect) on a rover 3.5 which supposedly has been bored out and has high compression pistons (though i don't have evidence). The exhuast has a standard mid box but no back box.

Where can i get a balance gauge from and are they expensive? I have heard you can use a listening pipe, is this reliable enough?

Also is the standard needle still most suitable?

I am also planning to reset the timing so my next question will be where can i get a dwell meter? and how much?

Look for the Gunsons Carbalancer. I have seen them at Halfords recently, although I can't imagine who would buy one nowadays!

save yourself 10/15 quid and do it the way people used to do it when men were men and cars were cars, use a piece of pipe and do it by ear.

Mark 1 earhole is more accurate than anything sold by Halfords, and a site quicker, those ballancers take a while to set up to deliver an reasonably accurate repeatable reading.

Agreed with the bit of pipe. I think Chris is on about these though http://www.gunson.co.uk/item.aspx?item=1813&cat=668 not very difficult to set up or use. Probably easier than mercury gauges and if your tone deaf.

Yep
The carb balancer is a cheap tacky piece of kit, but it does work if you get the thing mounted so the flowmeter is stable. But using the pipe does work ok if you have good hearing.

I would always opt for the flowmeter because it tells you how much air is actually moving (relative from one carb to the other) as opposed to the amount of noise you get from the "shush" of the jets.

Just my own preference. We all have our own opinions. Its such a cheap piece of kit its worth a go really.
