Hose fittings, ideas wanted...

Post by Alley Kat »

Hello gents,

I need some straight and 90 degree fittings for water hose. ID about 6-8mm, not crucial what it is exactly. Brass is fine, ally would be ideal. They'll be soldered into ally catch & overflow bottles.

Found plenty of these:

But elbows seem silly money - e.g. earls ones for £20 ea!

Any ideas or sources would be welcome. I've done the Think, Merlin, NF Auto type places. Thought about using ally tube from the local shop, but bending it, and making some sort of swage or bump (e.g. rivets) to help retain the hose is a bit of an issue on small ID tube.

Take another look at think auto - download the pdf catalogue.

Part: HEM98-4-6
"1/4NPTF male 90o for 3/8 hose-brass (B)" £5.84

Same thing as comes on a red-top facet fuel pump i think. Personally I wouldn't solder brass to ally.

If you can tig, I would use a -6 ally weld-on bung (WO7-6 £2.95) and steel -6 swivel fitting (HEF97-6 £2.77)

Thanks chaps. Got the Think PDF, just a bit reluctant to order stuff without seeing what it looks like. Will ring them and see if someone can give me a clue though.
I was going to use HTS2000, similar to Lumiweld; it can be built up and cast etc, pretty strong for what it is.

Hi John, a good site that one... I'm just magpie'ing things as usual, making a cheap overflow and catch can, with an external sight tube. Should save a load of cash if it works out.

The Earls or Speedflow.co.uk websites usually have lots of good photos of the stuff.

Or if you contact some of the fabricators, they could probably supply you the swaged bent pipes themselves.

They also do brass connectors (as well as the plastic ones)

Ta, they look smart for the price. Mine'll cost £3.75 each though plus the fittings, hence the faffing with fittings; a pair of sturdy drinks bottles for £7.50. Used them before as a catch can, going to see if one'll work as a header bottle and other as overflow. Yes, my budget is tighter than a fishes arse at 20,000 fathoms.... :)

Thanks Pocket, I see they do weld-on necks now, ideal. And also a headlight in a style I've been after for my bike... cheers :)
