Injecting SBC...

What parts will i need to source in order to megasquirt/EDIS an old SBC as cheaply as possible?
Im aware of the parts i need to do the same to the RV8, but not too experienced with Chevy...

What sort of set up are you after? port injection of single point throttle body?
If port injection the simplest set up would be to get a TPI manufold then adapt that, though Elliot would probably dissagree (I would look at his set up if I were you).
Once you have a manifold and throttle body then you need a block temp sender, a manifold temp sender, Throttle position sender (map sender is with the Megasquirt board) then it depends what features you want all are listed on MS site and MS extra.
The set up for the rover and the chevy are basically the same.
EDIS is not the only way to do wasted spark, the M/S Extra set up will do it without the EDIS controler and means you are not limmited to 5.5k ish revs.
Before you take this on I would thoroughly read both the Megasquirt site and the extra site, the answer to these questions are on the sites and it is definatly not a "plug and play" solution to EFI.

Mike,
is EDIS limited to 5.5k? I was told that the standard limit was 6.25k and I don't want to lose that last 750rpm.

Some versions of EDIS 8 are RPM limited. Some are not. Chapter and verse is there to be found. I just can't remember where at the moment, but a quick look on msefi.com suggests 6800 for EDIS 8
As a bit of history, the first engine ever to run on MS was a 350 Chevy which Bruce Bowling has in his MK3 jag and the fuel map that comes preloaded is for that engine.
There are more SBCs megasquirted than almost anything else, which is good news for you.

What is the engine going in and what revs you taking it to?
TPI manifold provides a good starting position and has the required GM sensors on it already. It is considered restrictive for big power (and therefore high revs if n/a) - so it depends what you are doing with the engine.
EDIS provides a nice bolt on solution without having to worry about too much in order to get your engine up and running.
My chevy my timline was thus:
Basic megasquirt fuel only - with crappy mallory dual point.
Basic megasquirt fuel only - HEI dizzy (much better)
Megasquirt extra - running HEI dizzy
Megasquirt extra - EDIS 8
I'm now in the process of upgrading to MS2-extra, so I can get CAN bus for future transmission controllers.

My understanding was that the common EDIS units were limited to about 5.5k (ok some said 5.8K) I didn't think any ran up as far as 6.8k. Could be wrong but I made some of the basic decisions on how I was going to to control my engine based on it.

I tested 3 EDIS-8 modules on my bench setup ( pic at:
http://www.jag-lovers.org/snaps/snap_vi ... 1180548300) this morning. "Cut out" means PIP signal disappears or goes heywire on my scope.
They all had the following part no's and cut out at:
F4SF-12K072-AA 4D06A: 6600 rpm
F1AF-12K072-AD 2H11A: 7000 rpm
F3LF-12K072-AA 3D06D: 7000 rpm

Should be more than enough for a breathed on 350

The motor will possibly be going into a defender 90. Big revs not so important as big torque, so prob revving to no more than 6 - 6.5K.....

Over 7K is pretty extreme for a push rod!
The reason I always recommend EDIS for non electronics types is that there are more cases of people failing to get direct coil drive working on V8s than EDIS. I have not idea why, but it saves me grief helping people out compared to EDIS which generally just gets on with the job.
If you know what you are doing (and you do) then it should not cause any issues.

6-6.5k rpm is high. I shift at 5300 and that feel plenty fast enough in my dakar.

this could of course be down to the transmission snapping torque those 2 hairdryers bring to the party...
