Completely ignorant about fuel injection

I'm in one of my 'I want to build a new engine' phases.

I would like to use injection but I have absolutely no idea about it at all. I know there is a squirty thing that squirts fuel just behind the valve and theres either throttle bodies, or a plenum chamber with a big buterfly on it, but that's about it.

What different systems are there? If I bought an engine with fuel injected manifold on and what have ya, where would I start in setting it all up. There's loads of sensors and what hav ya?

What is megasquirt? I have seen some threads on here and on the net. Apparently one builds it all oneself, which would be fine because I have done lots of electronics before.

How do I know what manifold is what. I have currently got my eye on a 1992 engine, any idea what system this would be? The engine number is 36D08026, so that makes it discovery EFI (auto), using the engine numbers thread.

Any help greatly appreciated. A brief lesson in EFI would be great :)

I suppose the same goes for me, i always wanted to run an injected car, so finally after flogging my carb and manifold and purchasing various efi bits, i'm going to have phil from extra efi build me one, i must have read the site and his cobra build a few times before i finally understood it all, i would have thought the best way for you to go is to rebuild the engine as u wish, inform phil of the build u have and let him recommend a suitable unit, i know i'm not sh!t hot at electronics or soldering , but i seem to have got my head round it all !!

The answers to those questions could fill an encyclopedia!!!

There are basically two different types of fuel injection inlet manifold fitted to the RV8. There's the type with the plenum chamber containing eight trumpets, and the very late 'thor' type.

I've got pics of the variants here:

towards the bottom of the page.

All the plenum types are in principle the same thing, they just have different sensors and the like as fuel injection technology moved on.

Have you read the megasquirt / megajolt websites?
