so i whipped the heads off my winter rebuild project (3.5 RV8) the other day and found No. 6 cyl seriously corroded, (i have pics but cant seem to get them on here unless they are hosted online somewhere else already, which they're not). the piston and liner are heavily pitted, so much so the even with the heads off i cant rotate the crank by hand.
the guy i bought it off assured me it was a good runner and sounded great, i'm now not convinced. No. 3 cyl also had a little corrosion to the piston crown but nothing like this. so now i need to get it fixed, obviously, but i'm not sure of the best/ most cost effective way of sorting it. apparently re-lining it will be a total ball-ache and super expensive, boring the whole thing out seems a little excessive as well as expensive, any one got any bright ideas? or is it for the bin? cheers fellas.......

I guess it depends on how badly its corroded, apparently you have to put pics on a host site like photobucket etc and then post them onto here.

I would have thought its worth taking the block to a local engineers and get them to look at the bores and liners before you decide to bin it. What were the head gaskets like when you took them off?

Get it re-bored if it isn't corroded past the point a bore will save or get another block/engine. 3.5 engines are dirt cheap these days, so much so a localish guy to me just scraps them now. Coming to think of it I scraped a couple of good blocks before crimbo.

If it's so bad, I'd say the bin (or Ebay, they will buy ought on there) if you can't afford new liners. I think I'm right in saying the liners can only be rebored to +40 tho. If it was a little corroded, I might be tempted to save it with a rebore, but if it's a whole new liner job, I'd just scrap it.

Im don't know, not having replaced liners myself, but I don't think it's so bad you can change liners in the comfort of your own home with a hammer and a piece of wood. You just need to get them honed afterwards, so if your confident enough you could reliner it....maybe. Marki may suggest better.

But considering that shite 3.5's go for 10 a penny and there's loads of them, I might just get another block.

the head gaskets seemed pretty reasonable, no obvious signs of blowing or damage.
i was hoping to be able to leave the bottom end alone but, alas it'll all have to come out now for a trip to the engineers. n'er mind.
