Hi,having decided against using a range rover fuel pump on my chevy powered capri,I have bought a carter fuel pump to make sure it will be up to the job,I will be mounting it in the boot with my tank, but cant mount it lower than my tank, will it lift the fuel out of the tank enough?
The petrol feed pipes exit at the top of the tank!
Do these pumps suck fuel or are purely gravity fed?
sorry about all the questions,Im so close to getting my car finished,...

I use a Carter marine pump on mine Dave. I use the Carter for the carb, and a Holley red top for the feed to the Nos fuel system.
My MGB has a normal fuel tank under the boot floor and the Carter pump has been fine for two years of road use (about 4000 miles) When I race, I use the Carter pump to drain my main tank. Then I connect it to a 1.5 gallon tank in the boot so the pump suction is flooded until; the race tank is about half full.
This did put a strain on the Carter pump and it got noisy after 2 years and it started to wear and pressure was unstable. When I went to RS and asked for a repair kit I was told there isnt one. So this year I had to buy a new Carter pump. I can now see I should really have fitted a non return valve in the fuel line to stop the fuel draining back to the main tank. This would have kept the Carter with a flooded suction.
On normal road use for the last 2 years my Carter has been lifting fuel to prime itself from dry. This can be seen from my fuel pressure gauge as it jums up and down for about 4 seconds before the pressure becomes stable.
Basically. I have seen the Carter pump self prime ok for 2 years with the fuel level in the tank about 10" below the dry pump. If you fit a check valve before the pump to stop the fuel draining back and leaving the pump dry I reckon it should be fine.
