After a dummy build I had coil bind on the inner valve spring. Gave the heads to my local engineering firm along with springs, caps, lift info etc and said....can you machine these so I dont get coil bind on the inner spring?
They came back minus all of the support around the guide. Now, im not sure that there is any other way of doing this cos im not an engineer. Cured the coil bind though!

Question is-I've been told that it is possible the inner spring will rattle around now that there is nothing around the guide, is there a form of top hat retainer that I can get that will sit on the spring platform and around the guide to minimise this or do people not think it will be a problem?

Both sets of my heads were machined by Real Steel to lower the deck under the valve springs. Then I used their valve spring shims to set the fitted height of the double springs I use.
Basically, you buy some soft test springs which are just enough to hold the valves closed, then you measure the distance from under the spring cap to the bottom of the retainer holes. Once you have this distance, you can add shims of various thickness to place under the proper valve springs so the fitted height is correct when you bung the springs back in.
I use the double valve springs with matched caps and collets from RS that are ok for racing.

If the inner and outer springs are matched you wont have any probs with bind or rattle once the height is set. I also had my guide tops machined down to accomodate the increased lift on my cam.

Put my mind at rest. Ive got the real steel springs caps and collets and also had the top of the guides machined down so I think my set up is similar to yours. Will just shim them up to the correct length then.
