Help with Cam Shaft number please

Hi,can any one help,have just been given a near new cam but i am usure what it is,i know it came out of a V8 and the only markings on the end are as follows; in stamped are the numbers 708716 but engraved by hand is the number RS 262 would this be a Hurican or similar,any help would be good as no idea what to time it up at 6-8 Deg TDC

it might be part of Real steels cam range, if it is going by the numbers its a serious cam (race cam) and cant be used on an unmodified engine. You will have to machine the valve guides use competition springs and possibly pocket the pistons to stop the valves hitting. Its also a mechanical cam which means you need solid lifters.
I cant say for sure that it is a Real Steel cam as another manufacturer might use the same numbers but its worth giving them a call.

Thanks for the info,will ring realsteel and see if it's one of there's,did'nt really want to do heavy mods to the engine,but as 4.6 heads are going on i might just go for it , i feel the need for more power :D

4.6 heads aren't going to help power as they flow virtually the same as all the rover heads bar the early ones. If its the cam I think it is you might want to re-consider using that cam as it really is a race cam and should be used with stage 3 heads and high compression. It might be a bit of a handfull on an otherwise standard engine. It also has a power band of 4500-7800 rpm which calls for a very strong and well put together bottom end or your going to break it very quickly.

Marki is right, if the cam sits at the top of the real steel range as its numbering would suggest then it would be useless in an otherwise stock engine. I believe this might not be the case though. From memory the range in cams went 224, 234, 248, 256, 266, 276. The numbers refer to the amount of duration @ .050 lift. However it is possible that the RS 262 designation of this cam refers to duration @ zero lift (or .005 lift) and as such would be suitable for road use. Real Steel cams are made for them by one of the big uk camshaft companies and i'm almost 100% sure its kent cams. Its highly unlikely that the "hurricane" and "viper" cams etc are stamped with those names. Much more likely to be stamped with a Kent cams PN. Also given that a cam with 262 @ .050 lift would be made in much smaller numbers than the popular road cams and the fact that i'm sure the big solid cam was a 266 (i dont think the hydraulic cams went bigger than 256 - i may be wrong) then i think you may have a hurricane or stump puller cam. Phone RS and Kent, one of them should be able to tell you for sure.

The part number for Real Steel's Hurricane camshaft is DW 262, and they hand engrave the number on the end of their cams.
I think that you may just have a hurricane cam, ideal for road use.
As has been suggested , a call to Real Steel should solve the mystery.
