Playing with sumps again, what is the ideal distance the strainer should be from the bottom of the sump??

Hi Ian
for me I would work on 1/4 inch to 3/8 inch clear of the sump bottom. Would depend on the cutouts on the sides of the metalwork that suports the strainer if there are any.

Ian,
The advice I was given many years ago was 1/4 inch gap and never put cutouts in the curtain around the strainer, should be obvious why!
The other thing to look out for is does the pickup assembly have any support other than the pipe? If not I suggest adding something.

Has anyone tried surrounding the pickup in a perforated metal tube?
To give a baffled sump effect as the pickup is covered by a column of oil so less effected by cornering forces, but the perforations stillow oil to flow in and out
