I think my car hates me :)

Ok so it seems every time I do something on the car it bites back.
Just changed the steering upper shaft as one of the UJ's was worn, and it seems I have put the new one back on one spline out (there is no king spline on these)
Think it will stay like that for a while now
I think I should start calling it "Christine"

Make sure you centralise the steering box - there's a little mark on the side of the input shaft into the box.
I've owned three P38's and they all pulled to the left - I fixed mine by aligning the box, setting the tracking then driving the car with the adjuster loose to fine tune it. It now drives perfect.
I've written it up here:

Steering box was central, it was me being a muppet that put the steering wheel off centre

Mine still steers like a pig. I have no idea why. But I have done:
Steering centralised
New bushes
New balljoints
Tracking experimented with
Castor angle adjusted
Tyre pressures adjusted.
Nothing makes it very good.

2 Gallons of petrol and a lighter...

It's a P38, it will need more than 2 gallons just to get to where he torches it...
Seriously, though...
Have you looked at the propshafts? I have been told it's similar to the Discos, if so, the rear shaft has a donut type coupling and they can go off and set up a big vibe. The front prop also has a weakness at the transfer case end, the double UJ can fail and smash the casing to bits.
Also, rotate the tyres and see if that changes anything.

Props all fine. Tyres moved around!
I might try 16" rims next.

Have you had the strings out to check it manually?
Are the wheels actually in line with the chassis?
Are the wheels wheelbase the same right to left?
How solid are the uprights on these, could it be bent? (Bounced up a curb to hard?)

Hmm, not actually checked that the axles are parallel. I might do that next time it's on the ramps.

Yippee
MOT passed however advised of a leaky exhaust where the headers meet the downpipes, took it back to Powerflow who built the custome exhaust and they are going to install some nice shiny new V band clamps instead of the 2 bolt flanges so that should cure that one. Then maybe I can do a bit of tuning before the winter rebuild
