Hi all,
A youngster that I met the other day has a Rangie Classic with the flapper system and it is giving him grief. Sometimes it runs OK and other times it can't pull the skin off a rice pudding, plus it sucks fuel in like it's paid to.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a manual or troubleshooting guide for the system, please?

The one I find best is the Land Rover service guide - it was written after experience of the system in use, rather than the BL manual which is more based on from when it was new - and talks about special tools (Fast Check) which simply ain't needed as a DVM can do all they do and more. (DVMs were new and very expensive when the flapper was designed)

It might be hard to find, but Ramon Alban sells a guide which is pretty similar.

Fault finding on flapper is very possible DIY wise as it's all analogue, and doesn't require any special tools. The only exception being full testing of the ECU. However, you do need basic electronic skills like knowing how to use a DVM - and patience. New parts are getting hard to find and expensive, and used ones may be as worn as the existing. So you do need to check a component really is faulty before trying a used replacement, which should also be tested before fitting.

And like all analogue systems measuring small currents, the condition of the various connectors from loom to component is critical, so they should be examined carefully for corrosion etc and cleaned as a matter of course. It's also best to do all resistance measurements at the ECU connector as this tests the loom and component together.
