LT77 reluctant to go into R, 1, 3 & 5

I'm slowly getting my car back together. I swapped myold bellhousing and LT. I got it moving under its own steam for the first time just now :D

However, the gearbox was very reluctant to go into any of the gearstick forward gears. I got it back into the garage and whipped the top off the transmission tunnel. Looking at it closely, the stick it touching the top of the cup over the ball, and it doesn't for 2 & 4. I can push the cup down a bit by hand, but there is some flex in it as it's only attached at the rear. In taking it all apart during the engine swap I assume I've buggered something up. I read elsewhere that the cup is not mandatory as the large wire spring will hold the stick down, is this true?

I had a similar problem on a T5. Turned out a small plastic bit had dropped out when I put the cup back and was sitting at the back of a selector arm. Took me ages to find the white / ali coloured bit.

Hmmm, I took the cup completely off and it made no noticeable difference. I don't believe I have the anti-rattle plastic bit as I'm pretty sure it pinged across the garage never to be seen again when I first took it apart about a year ago.

I think I've solved it. The remote mounting bushes were shot. I suspect they may have been 30 year old originals. On top of that, there was a rubber MGB gaiter that the stick was pushing against at full forward. I replaced the bushes and rejigged the gaiter and now (whilst sat in the garage), the gearchange is nearly as good as my Kia :)
