The madness of insurance quotes!

My littel Pug 106 diesel blew itself apart the other day in spectacular style, so I thought I'd best get on the case and start looking for a new car. I've kept looking for the same two cars as I did last year, TDCi Fiesta (circa 2004) or a 200TDi landy. The insurance quotes I've been getting are literally mental.
I'm 32yrs old and have 6yrs NCB, my insurance has NEVER gone down despite accruing NCB etc. I live in Liverpool (yes, I know lol!) and my parents live in Sheffield, so I always get a quote for sheffield just to see the differences, and for reference I'm using moneysupermarket.
Fiesta 1.4TDCI
2011: Sheffield = £430, Liverpool = £620, not a bad difference really.
2012: Sheffield = £413, Liverpool = £898 ........ WTF?!?!
Land Rover 88 (classic)
2012: Sheffield = £145, Liverpool = £505 BOTH with Lancaster Insurance who are normally very good, even in the northwest.
Anyone else getting silly hikes to their quotes or is it just my bad luck in the northwest? People say I should move, well I've been wanting to for 3yrs but when your house is in negative equity it's kinda hard to! I think a lot of this has to do with the riots last year, down my road they burnt out at least 10 cars over the course of 4 days ...
Added to the fact that it's 6points/£200 for driving without insurance, I could technically get caught several times a year and it still be cheaper than my insurance premiums! Gah!
