It won't be OK in the rain though!
I still reckon the lean bog and possible the detonation is due to the fact that the carb can now breath a lot better.
Chris do you know whether the carb was purchased from RPI? if it was and they used one of their jet and rod settings then it is likely to be miles out. In my humble they don't know their 4rse from their elbow!
hello, no the receipt was from D.J.E - although I cant find a web page for them at the mo?

Fair enough!
In my humble I think that you can get your current setup to work but you are going to have to get familiar with taking the carb apart as it will need re-calibrating.
You could lower the whole setup a fair bit by removing the heat insulator and just by using 5 gaskets base gaskets instead. Or you could try cutting the insulator in half so that it is only 10mm high. You would then need to rub it flat using wet an dry stuck to a pane of glass. Don't blame me it the thing snaps though as they are very brittle! I guess a machine shop could do it using a grinder.

"Any comments".... Yep, It' a spark plug!
Personally I think the days of plug reading have long one with the advent of unleaded but that's just my opinion.
If I was really pushed for a comment I'd say that it looks quite lean to me but I stand by my first opinion.
With regards to the filters I can not read the vernier on the first picture but the gap does look quite small to me.

I think thats not bad for the plug. Clean insulator with a sooty surround. I prefer to see a bit more soot so i reckon a tad more fuel might be ok.
Depends on how you feel the engine has been running to be honest as the plug reading can vary in seconds depending on engine operating conditions.
Is it pinking or knocking? Getting too hot? ie anything that does not feel right?
I guess one filter is 1" higher than the other?
Was this the old base you used or is this a new one?
