Got the engine stripped now. As I thought. Both the front pistons suffered the same fate.

I'd say that was detonation by the exhaust valve so it's getting very hot just there.

The left hand piston melted at the bottom of the bore. The right hand one melted at the top of the bore.
When number two melted last time, it was a the bottom of the bore, just as this one was??
The results are telling me somehting here. I just wish I knew what it was! Apart from, I'm running lean, flat out in 3rd gear...
