Hi DJ
job for next week, go to a scrapyard, buy a Honda C70 engine and take it apart with the help of son, you can never start working on engines too young :D and a v8 is a bit complicated when you are under five .
You might find this link handy http://www.pricemotorsport.co.nz/introduction.html
best regards
Mike

Hi guys- just going about putting the heads etc back on and I have opened the plug gaps etc and modded the plugs as per Dave Vizzards and Trevor langfeilds books (have always done this). But what do you guys think of indexing the spark plugs so they face the inlet?? Read about it in a few places - and just wandering if it is with the 55 minutes sitting with a box of plug washers to get them all uniform! Hav also read its about as effective as fanning a hat at your engine! Any experience?

I used to mess around doing the plugs as per Trevs instructions. But these days I buy ECS plugs from NGK that are already done :)

Personally I cant see the point in indexing spark plugs to be the same way round in all cylinders? I'm sure someone will be along to say why its a good idea. But it doesnt matter which way round the earth electrode ends up facing as the spark still comes from the same place in the middle of the plug?

Just my thoughts :)

Hi
as far as I see it if you have the big fat spark and the gaps wide enough to make use of it then indexing the plugs is not going to make any difference as you have ignited the mixture you can't ignite it more!. If you haven't got a big enough spark to fire off the mixture properly then indexing the plugs isn't going to help, you need to sort out the ignition to get a big fat spark. . . .
It also helps to buy the right length plugs, that makes a big difference

OOh will you look at that I have disagreed with Mr Vizard :nutz

Trying to get this bugger started - all seems fine but only get a little few pops on turning over - all sparks present and fuel is getting in- fearful of a vacuum leak! Is there and sneaky tips to check if its a vacuum leak is what's preventing a startup???

Cold compression test on the engine (heads re-assemble so valves not bedded in yet) was approx 70-100 psi which I was reasonably pleased with in the freezing cold! (I know this doesn't really tell me much) - there is fuel getting in and I have varified idle timing with the timing light. So I am pretty sure it's some sort of a vacuum leak! So tomorow I think I will try a start while covering the choke portion (no choke on it) etc to raise the vacume a bit.figured if I restrict the air going through the carb then even if there is a vacuum leak it will drop the pressure enough to pull some fuel through! God you put your soul into these things, you love them, work on them, spend money on them.... Then within 24 hours you feel like sticking a rag in the tank and lighting a box of swans!!!
