Well, to all those who helped me, thanks. My V8 is now running fine. The new dizzy makes it a lot 'steadier'. I also found out that the petrol in the tank was pants too, so when I replaced that with new fuel everything runs fine now without misbehaving.
All I have to do now is get my brakes sorted to I can STOP it!!

Mine runs without a working vac unit. It's either a bit dead at top or bottom (can be chosen by turning the dizzy 2-3mm) but nowhere near as bad as you described!
Still, I've already had one "working" replacement vac unit which was just as shafted. My second (free) comes tomorrow... time will tell!

I'm pretty sure that the only running on 4 cylinders thing was down to the bad petrol. Still, on the way I discovered a lot of other things that weren't right, so I suppose all's well that ends well!
I didn't even need to use the Bradex Easy Start I ordered....
