all modern BMW speedo work from the ABS system (rear left wheel sensor usually!).
I would go pre Vanos M62 (the M62 not the M62TU). I have a M62TU with a noisy vanos on cold starts which is going to cost 500quid in parts to quieten down and the timing procedure looks a mare!

my 540 had a rattle for the first few seconds of startup - never worried me. Unless of course yours is taking longer to sort itself out.

Problem is O rings in the vanos unit harden and loose their seal. BMW want to sell you a new unit complete at many squids. But you can replace just the o rings and teflon seals. Labour intensive but not costly in BMW terms.
When the seals fail, you get a poor idle and bottom end.

If you gave me the choice I would take the lexus unit, bit of hassel finding a toyota manual box, but get the right one I am pretty sure it is just a bolt up job. The lexus has more tuning stuff at prices you can afford, more amature tuners tuning them, designed to run well over 250K miles on just basic servicing and well under stressed in basic spec.
Best regards
Mike

Can't do anything with the M62TU vanos, no seals to replace, it's a new unit for 250quid a bank. Problem effects a lot of Range Rovers as well, range rover parts are often cheaper, a MAF is half price if you go to a Range Rover dealer!

That's a lot of engine for 300quid. Break the rest of the car on eBay and you will be quids in!

Hi
that engine isn't even run in . . . for £300 absolute result.
Especially as you already have the box.
If you brake the rest stick the bits up on the forsale section
Best regards
Mike
