I have done some further checking and am beginning to doubt the accuracy of the information from real Steel.

I have e-mailed Crane and asked them to confirm the cup size of their high rev lifters and will report back with precise information.

I did not found the Crane lifters in the RV8 Cataloge from Real Steel :?: :?:
They have standard, Rhoads and solid ones according to their internetsite.
So I assume they use Chevy ones these days for the RV8.

Is it about the old skool valve train noise that Rhoads is nobody's favourite???

Have to say its more noticeble inside the car than outside........but for shure they deliver more Inhg vacuum and thats nice if you've a radical cam
With my Viper Hurricane I have 3 Inhg more over the standard lifters.

I spoke to the Crane tech department this afternoon and they say the cup size is 5/16" and not the 5/32" that real steal say it is.

I rang real steel and toild them what Crane had said and they said Crane were wrong! and then said 5/32" was the radius not the overall size, measured the ones they sent and they are 5/32" overall size and not radius!

Now have a nasty headache and would rather be concentrating on another sort of cup size!!!

I'll have to go over to the garage tomorrow and test fit one of the pushrod ends in one of the lifters using some engineers blue to establish whether the size is correct or not.

Test fitted the 5/32" ball in the Crane lifter and it is the correct size so Real Steel were right and the guy at Crane was wrong! as also was Paul at V8 tuner who said they were the same size as the rovers which would have been 1/32" too large.

Took the Real Steel AZ500 pushrod kit in to my machine shop and should have them back in a couple of days, thank god

Who could believe it is that complicated to get a correct fitting pushrod and what surprises me is it is very easy to be misllead.

i better check which ends we had fitted on my pushrods when i bought them, :?

Tony,

I know, it's a bloody pain in the proverbial.... but better safe than sorry.

Just run some engineers blue lightly round the cup and push rod end in, it should have a trace of blue right to the bottom of the ball if its the right size. The Rover rocker arm size is 3/16" so if you have different size ends on your pushrods don't get them mixed up.

Hi !
Very interesting thread at the right moment - as I´m just looking for new cam + valve train....
I decided to fit Crower 50320 ( similar to JE 101 ) with Crane lifters and Adjustable Pushrods , to avoid only averaged preloadsetting.
Is there also a difference in congruence between lower balls from the adj. pushrods and the Crane lifters - hope that someone of you guys can help me with your experience , before ordering these expensive spares , that are if possible not the best !
What results are expected if they are dismatched ?

V8 tuner recommends the Rhoads lifters as the best - but I fear the noise
(don´t like Diesels) and also don´t often rev my RR in high ranges .

Thanks
Hannes

Hannes.

The adjustables will probably come as standard with the rover size 3/16" ball ends but you should be able to order a set with the 5/32" ball ends to suit the Crane lifters.

I got mine from Real Steel and they swapped half of the ball ends to suit the crane lifters.

The consequence of not using the correct size would be excessive wear of the lifter cup and push rod end.

Kevin, just to maybe confuse you (maybe just me) a little, I was emailing Paul at V8T and he replied

The Crane Hi-Rev lifters have the same size lifter cup as the standard lifter so they are to suit a 3/16" cup or pushrod ball. We also stock some Crower lifters which have a slightly smaller cup size but the lifter cup is chamfered so will accept 3/16 or 5/32" pushrod ends.

Is this right? I want to use their HD pushrods, but I cant see that a tapered lifter cup wont wear away quickly!

Yes Paul said the same thing to me I got my Crane lifters from him, but having trial fitted a 5/32" ball end into the cup found that Real steel were correct. I was also concerned that if the cup and ball had different radiuses that premature wear would result.

Funny old world, Muscle Manta and I are about to build a road tuned 3.5 lump for a bloke, we are going to fit Crane high rev lifters so I've just gone through the whole exercise that Kevin has gone through! Even got the same email reply from Crane stating that the cup size is 5/16 then panicked in the same way because the RS pushrod aren't supplied with that size ball end. Only when I was googling did I come cross this thread!

UPDATE...Summit have replied to an email, they state that the cup suits Chevy pushrods. They could mention this on their website.

Hmm, I'm using Eaton Lifters which I think may be made by Crane (anyone know for sure?). Same as Holden 253ci (1970s 4.2 V8 used in the Holden Kingswood, HZ models, etc) lifters which are commonly used here in Rover and P76 engines as a cheaper alternative to Rover ones.

When I bought my adjustable rods form Real Steel a few years ago they came with two different size rod ends. Are they now selling them with the Rover size rod ends only?

Bugger !!! I have had a Crane 216 cam and a set of 99284 lifters since 1989 ! I got them on holiday in Florida, it must have been the first 216 cam in the UK, I didnt put it in my engine as planned back then, I am just getting round to building a new engine and read this thread!

Help, what pushrods have I got to buy then?
