The metal fabricators handbook.
In my experience you cant beat a bit of hands on help from someone who is a good welder. I had hobby welders when i was young and got by for a while then enroled in welding school every wednesday when i was 20 and learned a lot, mainly i wasnt wasting time wondering if i was set up correctly or just doing something wrong. The other thing you cant beat is pure practice! my local engineering firm is now used to me turning up and rooting through their cut-offs barrel! He lets me take as much as i can carry for a fiver!
Just wondered if you earthed the welder to an underground pipe or a metal spike driven into the ground as advised to prevent HF interference to electrical equipment nearby. I am probably going to have to take the spike route since there are no suitable pipes etc to use anywhere near my workshop.
