In my case we made spacers to fit between the caps and the plate as the idea was to copy similar girdle plate used on the firts Repco Brabham F5000.
These spacers will have to be able to stand the torque without crushing so that you maintain the required torque on the main bearing cap.
In the case of an 2 bolts main cap block the stud will need to be 1.500" into the block 2.250" for the cap and spacer 0.750" for the girdle (in my case where I use 20mm plate) and 0.750" for the washer and nut. Therefore the stud will need to be 5.250".
I advice you to use ARP 5.3'' stud kit, myseld I orderd custom J.Eales studs and it was out of price.
I opt to have soon an CNC-machined version of girlde plates. Firts waren hand-made.
The other alternative is to integrate directly spacer in the aluminium plate and skim main caps.
