It's not just software, going back to the original question. It depends on the mic being positioned so general mechanical noise doesn't drown out the pinking. Pinking isn't a million miles away from tappet etc noise. Separating one sound from another when they are similar ain't that easy - except on CSI, etc.
Which is why it would make sense to situate the knock sensor where the makers do - or be prepared to do a great deal of experimenting.

You'll find them bolted all sorts of places, so not that easy to do same, as there are so many variations.
Side of the block on an RV8 should be easy enough though, and is were the originals are mounted.

How far down does the water jacket go - in terms of fitting a stud for a sensor?

I certainly wouldnt be drilling holes.
Use a hole that's already there. Whether for an engine mounting etc
Or make a bracket directly off the engine mount hole.
Been a good few years since I seen an old block, but there'll be somewhere.
Really, I wouldnt be too fussy, get one bolted up somewhere and take it from there.
