i agree Bill.
BUT diy efi is diy efi, and vems is here in the uk also now,
it maybe small but it is growing,
so if someone puts out a call for diy efi cars etc dont you agree ALL diy efi vehicles are eligable?

Megasquirt is the most diy system I guess, but 'Diy' is any aftermarket injection system that you have fitted and tuned yourself in my view.

To 90% of people MS is no more DIY than any other ECU as they buy them built. Its very DIY if you build it from kit but that is becoming less and less.

I try and put them off the prebuilt route as much as possible. I lose sleep over what happends when the factory built units start to hit the market (and thank goodness they are late).

At the end of the day it is the community that holds MS together. How Phil, Eliot, James et al approach the brave new world will have a bearing on long term success. Looking at the latest code developments, the future is bright.

I must admit i never built my ECU.
vems sponsored me and supplied a fully built unit,
other wise i would of had a go myself.

As time goes on they will get harder and harder to build by hand as more SMD's are used to keep the size down. I thought the VEMS was already there as I didn't think you could buy a kit anymore but am probably wrong. Its a shame really as (for me anyway) its good fun soldering it together and watching it come to life. Of course you also have the benefit if something goes wrong you have a good idea what could be wrong.

That was probably the no.1 factor that appealed to me about MS.

I emailed him friday and he's replied this morning, they're going to do a piece on a diy efi car each month and mines on a long list of these cars. I guess they'll pick the cream of the crop and feature those, i'm buggered then! Not to worry, they must be swamped with peoples cars so you can guarantee they'll always be something better out there plus they've got to satisfy as many of the reader base as poss so the cars they chose will be dictated by that, what the majority want. Don't be offended guys if you don't get picked, you built them for yourselves not for everyone else!
V8'less but a fountain of dorky knowledge ref v8's!

There are no plans to stop offering MS as build yourself kits. However with the upcoming MS3 there is no way that all the components can be fitted in a sensible form factor without going SM. Now as most people don't necessarily want sequential injection and Coil on plug then this is only a limitation on a few % of installs.

I believe VEMS is still available as a partially populated board. ie only the main surface mount items fitted that are simply done better and cheaper by a pick and place machine.

This still gives plenty of scope for building up a custom ECU by fitting the driver ICs etc as needed.

I bought a factory built VEMS because I didn't have the time to build from a kit myself. The decision to buy rather than build simply came down to the time value of money - I was working lots of overtime when I started installing VEMS and I only had a month to do the install anyway, so I had to ship some of the VEMS work out.

I too am on the PPC list. They want the car to be running again before they'll commit for some reason... ;) ;)

From what I can gather the prefered option on VEMs is pre built. Think local support maybe an issue if you go the self build route.
