no it did have all of it connected apart from the viscous fan but i took it off when i discoverd it hard to turn over by hand so bit by bit i stripped it down turning it by hand to see if it got any easier. i turned it by hand to avoid any damage before i actualy started her, well that was the plan didnt count on my bro turning up and trying to move her

So the engine was complete and assembled when he started it? To be honest i have my doubts about me getting the timing wrong when i fitted the cam as i was carefull that everything lined up and after a further conversation with my brother he said the car fired up instantly and other than the horric noise it actuatly ran fine for the few seconds it ran
What about lubrication? Did it have oil in it when he fired it up? I can't imagine it would run for long with no oil in without sustaining some damage.
Maybe the pump cavitated and sucked air and he burned a bearing?
finally found out what the problem is. I took the cylinder head off to find sitting in no 2 cylinder a small bolt how the hell it got in there i dont know as i had none missing when i intially finished fitting the cam the only way i can think it got in there is through the inlet valve? (is this possible) as i didnt have any plugs removed when i changed the cam. There are a few dinks in the top of the piston and a mark on the cylinder head where it was inbeded but the actuall cylinder hasnt a mark on itHopefully ill be lucky as i think im due some.

You'll will be lucky if you haven't bent the valves, if it was my engine and with my luck they would be bent! (and a hole in the piston!)
You could check by holding the head upside down and pouring some white spirit into the combustion chamber, leave it for a while then check that the back of the valves aren't wet.
I guess a tiny amount of leakage would be OK?
