R380 and alternative power plant

Post by DaviesDJ »

Hi guys, I can't believe I am posting this as I am usually a firm rover man despite its faults:-) but when my r380 in the Landy goes I will rebuild it with quaif internals which will increase its strength significantly. Now I do like the idea of the Chevy LS engine as an alternative to the rover at some point in the future and was just discussing the hypotheticals of bolting the Chevy LS to a rover pattern bell housing?? Has this been done interns of a conversion plate?? In fact - is there any manual gearbox options for the LS?? In 4 or 2 wheel drive?? Not abandoning the rover yet- just thinking about my options when I eventually need to rebuild the 5.0. Cheers guys

Dave

Thanks mate:-) ye I saw that, but they don't have a UK agent. And it is quite dear - what difficulties do you think there could be to make an adaptor plate?? When I rebuild the r380 I will put the quaif gear set in and this will make it very strong:-) so would love to keep this setp. If I make an adaptor plate will I could manufacture a sort of spigot bush adaptor maybee?? And drill the flywheel to take a 10.5 inch rover clutch (paddle). I have never made an adaptor plate before. Does anybody have any tips on a rover to Chevy adaptor plate??

Hi
The basic plate will be the same as a rover engine to th350/th400 (Perry may still have one) but the bolts will be the "other way round" however the flywheel spacing will be different and you will probably need to use a chevy flywheel so you can use the chevy starter they look the same set up as the older small block, I would use the 153 tooth flywheel if it is an option and a matching presser plate with a custom disc (chev disc/ rover splines).
Best regards

Ahh, so I can re-drill the holes the other way round. I see- yes I would probarbly keep the LS flywheel as you say- - and a custom clutch plate etc. This is all just hypothetical obviously for now. But as much as I love the rover - when the Landy kicks its R380 I will consider this as I think the LS would really suit the Landy:-) Thanks mike! How's the rebuild??

There are plenty of 2wd gearboxes for the LS...

And I think the T56's can be adapted or had in 4wd in some vehicles. Cant imagine they'd be cheap though.

But unless you have a fair level of skill in selecting and having parts made....it really is easier just to buy a complete kit if someone offers it.

Or there are dozens of bellhousings available for the LS ( bolt pattern is same as SBC anyway apart from one bolt ), so you could maybe adapt an existing bellhousing.
