Tappet Adjuster Screw For Adjustable Rockers

Post by john 215 »

Hi,

Recently got hold of a set of adjustable rockers. They are not Group A items as fit standard shafts ( didnt Group A have slightly larger shafts ), a couple of the adjuster as passed there best on the ball ends, the lock nuts are munched on some of then too.

[/img]Image

The tread size is 3/8 x 24 UNF , i know JE Engineering did some rockers years ago but when contacted them they wanted the whole assembly's to check and recon, something i can do myself

Apparently the oil holes have been brazed up to control the amount oil flying around up top, would you open them up again :?:

Anyone got ideas where i may source a set from

Cheers John

John,

The group A rockers were normally Volvo B18/20 items and I believe that the rockers were rebushed to fit the Rover size shafts.

Can you take one of the adjusters with the ball end and post a picture.

You could also check with any of the Volvo classic part suppliers to see if the thread size is the same, but do check that the ball size is compatible with your existing one's and the push rod.

One other point is that rover rockers are 1.6/1 ratio but the Volvo's are listed as 1.5/1 however in reality the Volvo's are not of paticularly good quality and the ratio can apparently vary between 1.42 - 1.47/1 so you can lose a lot of lift and obviously performance.

It is suggested that the rocker gear geometry plays a part in this discrepancy and by optimising the geometry, height of the rocker shaft in relation to the valve stem tip that matters can be improved, this is often overlooked as with adjustable rockers people just set them to the correct clearance and assume all is ok.

Paying attention to detail in the valve train area can reap dividends.

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for the reply.

These rocker lived once in a SD1 rally car, the owner has built several championship winnig TR7 V8 engine's .

I dont think they are Volvo items as the thread as i say is 3/8 x 24 UNF the Volvo adjusters poss metric thread :?:

I have emailed the Healey suppliers in the link and mine are more or less the same lenghth, 1 1/4 ", the gent was'nt sure of the thread pitch so ordered one to see if they would fit.

The push rods are modular and have a ball socket in one end. I know JE done these once upon a time, so thats why i thought the rockers may be there as well, have heard they manufactured some these a while ago.

A couple of pictures,

I couldnt agree more with the comments on valve gear geometry, running shims at the moment and never been over joyed with that.

Thanks again,

Cheers John

Why not take the opportunity to convert to cups, plenty more choice of pushrods then as well.

I think I paid @£40 for 2 complete sets of Jesel adjusters with ground nuts & washers after tax, duty &clearance...

John,

Well having looked at some pics of Volvo rockers it appears you are right so still a mystery, any parts numbers on the rockers? they look like steel?

The push rods look like a good item but check that the ball end matches your lifter cup size.

Hi Kevin,
Yep made of steel but unfortunatley no markings on them, the mystery continues.

The push rods were runnig with these rocker i am pretty sure tyhey are JE, if you have a copy of Des Hammill book 'How to Power Tune Rover V8 Engine' have a look on page 117 this shows both his rockers and push rods.

John,

The Eales rockers are offset L & R as per the Volvo and original Rover ones and your pic shows rockers without offset unless it's just the pic, try laying them on a head to see if they sit correctly on the valve stems.

Did you get the point about the ball size and the lifter/ cam follower cup.

I used Crane hi rev lifters and the cup size was not the same as the Rover ones so made up some custum pushrods, if yours are wrong you can get a set of ball ends from real steel to match whatever lifters you intend to use.

Hi Kevin

They dont appear to be offset, but will check tomorrow.

Yeah looked on the Real Steel site

Funny how one change leads to others, but all for the best !
