dizzy question

Post by Sharpy »

hiya

i am a complete newb, i have recently bought a 3.5 v8 range rover engine, we have put power to it and it turns over, we have carb problems so not expecting it to start just wanted to see if it was seized? any how the question, we where told the dizzy was knackered, just taken it out and what we have is the gear that connects to the engine is completely dry , should it be?or should it have oil or water on it? at the mo there is no water in the engine but at the dipstick there is new golden coloured oil, am i missing something? the oil pump has no wiring to it yet will this change the dry state of the gear or is there deeper problems?
the dizzy is a 35d8, with new condenser, points, cap, rotor arm and ht leads, other than what we have replaced what else could be at fault and is there something within the engine that could be at fault?
the gear on the end of the dizzy looks fine, but it doesnt seem like its seen oil for a while, we just have black sticky set stuff?

If the engine has been sitting for a long time it will be dry, the oil pump may have even lost its prime so may need a bit more than just a turn over to get everything lubricated. If it has water on it you have big problems, should get lubed with oil when the engine is running.

Hello Paul,

The gear on the end of the distributor and the corresponding gear on the end of the camshaft into which it meshes, are largely splash fed with oil. For how long did you run the engine? Just on the starter for a few seconds? If so I dare say the time was inadequate to provide a coverage of oil.

The oil pump if standard is not electrically operated. It is mechanical, the gears within being turned by the key on the underside of the distributor gear. There should be two senders screwed into the oil pump cover...one is the oil warning light switch...this is the smaller of the two. The second is the oil pressure transmitter.
