Ideas needed

Post by Coops »

Im looking at making my own bottle heater for my nitrous system,
was thinking about the element from a heated seat, or has any one any other ideas,
of course it will be switched on and off via a relay and pressure switch, as per the manufactured blankets,

What is the heater for exactly :S I know it's for your nitrous bottle, but what does it do?

Could make your own blanket. Put some thick gauge resistance wire or something in a heatproof sleeve to insulate it, wrap it in zig zags or what ever, then stitch it into a blanket or something.

You might get some wire from RS components or something, and the sleeve from there too. Small Gauge wire might burn out and I have only ever come across thin resistance wire for use on other things so don't really know what is available.

the heater is used to keep the bottle up to pressure, so you can have a constant nitrous setting,
nitrous is best used at around 960-1100 psi, when the bottle is cold it can be as low as 500psi, which is not good,,,,,,

I made a setup before by routing cooling system lines to the rear, and wrapping them around the bottle.

Almost free, although it wasnt regulated in any shape or form. Im sure it wouldnt be that hard to add in some sort of thermostat etc.

Just used some 8mm tubing.

You can buy process heater pads from RS Tony.
I've got my first bottle heater in the garage with 80 watts of 12VDC pads if you want to try it out mate.

The proper bottle heater pads are 250 watts though.
I glued mine to some neoprene sheet and it worked pretty well in mild weather.

Come and grab it if you want to try it out.

Did you get this sorted? How big is the bottle?

What about a 12v heated travel blanket?

What about something like the heat pads you use under a glass fish tank if you have a snake or terapins?

The normal bottle heaters are 250 watt pads JC.
How big do fish tank ones go up to?

Ack, now you're asking.
Been about 4 years since I sold one!
Just had a quick look on "the reptile room" and the current range is as follows:

6in. x 11in : 7W (£15)
11in. x 11in : 12W (£16)
17in. x 11in : 20W (£18)
23in. x 11in : 28W (£20)
29in. x 11in : 35W (£23)
35in. x 11in : 42W (£25)
47in. x 11in : 60W (£27)

Although, if you were to wrap the heat pad in something that reflects heat such as the material you glue to a tranny tunnel and then again with a blanket it would have the effect of doubling the wattage.
I used to sell lighting for trop' and marine fish tanks. The principal that we operated on was that if you had an ally reflector round the bulb this would double the light going into the water.

Just a thought...
