Anyone know what "M" stamped into the piston crown signifies, there is also an "M" stencilled onto the area below the hyd tappets underneath the valley gasket.

Are you doing the compression test properly as it doesn't sound like it. All the plugs need to be out so the engine spins freely and the throttle needs to be held wide open and crank the engine until the gauge stops rising.
