Piston crown marked "M"
Anyone know what "M" stamped into the piston crown signifies, there is also an "M" stencilled onto the area below the hyd tappets underneath the valley gasket.

Thanks for the advice, I don't think the bores need checked, they look brand new. I think the engine's been refurbished although I have no idea of the history, but the camshaft has blue paint on it and the cyl heads also have blue paint circles on them. Are you doing the compression test properly as it doesn't sound like it. All the plugs need to be out so the engine spins freely and the throttle needs to be held wide open and crank the engine until the gauge stops rising. Oil down the bores doesn't always work on a rover unless you use a fair bit...
