As previously said No 1 cylinder is on the right when looking at the front of the engine, the inlet lobe is the second lifter on the right.
There is a good page on the RPI website for dialing in the cam. Very important to establish true TDC as the dial gauge will show TDC over a few degrees. Better ...

I run a Mallory with Weber 500 on my 4.6, I adjusted the mechanical advance to the minimum 16 degrees (max 24) and run with 12 degrees at idle giving 28 degrees at 3000rpm. Interestingly, increasing the total advance to 32 gave a slight increase in power over 3000rpm but sacrificed a little below ...
