Re: 1990s Range Rover 4.6ltr V8 Timing failure
OK, I've plugged everything in and powered everything up but the software doesn't seem to be able to communicate with the ECU even though the laptop can see the device, but there are no LEDs lit up - should there be? I believe there should be communication with just the ignition on. My laptop only h...

Re: 1990s Range Rover 4.6ltr V8 Timing failure
The car has a standard 1990 Lucas hot-wire fuel injection ECU but with a 'Tornado' chip. The tick-over was 1000rpm when I bought the car and it seemed fine, even though the chip states it should be 800rpm. I've just bought a 'Rover Gauge' and will be plugging it in at the weekend. Never used one bef...

Re: 1990s Range Rover 4.6ltr V8 Timing failure
Unfortunately, it's NOT the idle control valve, or a vacuum leak because I noticed that the problem is still present with the idle control valve disconnected and the hole blocked up. - Please see the video. The vehicle drives and behaves normally for about 15min, and then all of a sudden the ...

Re: 1990s Range Rover 4.6ltr V8 Timing failure
Vacuum leak has been traced to a faulty idle control valve (the old Land / Range Rover one with the stepper motor) - should be an easy fix. :?: I've already got a replacement off Amazon. I couldn't get the old one apart so I put it in the bench vice and hit it with a lump hammer - turns out that you...

Re: 1990s Range Rover 4.6ltr V8 Timing failure
The timing issue is now fixed.
Turned out that the CAM shaft retaining plate was never fitted, so another black mark against RPi.
Not out of the woods yet though as the engine has now developed a bad vacuum leak.
Thanks to all commenters.

Re: 1990s Range Rover 4.6ltr V8 Timing failure
Update: Both gears are now on order from Turner Engineering. However, Turner Engineering were not very comforting about the outcome as they said that the timing gear would not fail in isolation and something must have caused it but I won't find out what until the front cover is removed. :? I'm curre...

Re: 1990s Range Rover 4.6ltr V8 Timing failure
Thanks to all, this is very useful information as I thought the helical gear was part of the CAM shaft. Now I know it can be replaced separately it should be a much simpler and cheaper job! I based in Derby but can transport the car to anywhere in the country if anyone wants to recommend a garage wh...

Hi - Picture of the engine in the first post above (seems to be working). Thanks.

Standard Rover CAM covers have been replaced with some Edelbrock ones, dizzy at the front.

Re: 1990s Range Rover 4.6ltr V8 Timing failure
OK - Got an update on this, been talking to an 'expert' on the Range Rover V8s and he says he's never heard of a 4.6ltr timing chain jumping as it's more likely to snap rather than jump, but what he has heard of is the distributor shaft striping its teeth where it meets the cam shaft sprocket, and t...

1990s Range Rover 4.6ltr V8 Timing failure
Hi all, hope you are all out and about in your V8s enjoying the great weather, I was. :? At about 70 the engine began to splutter and backfire, so I pulled over and now it won't start again. The AA man said it sounded like engine's timing is totally out, like the timing chain has jumped, but as far ...

Re: Brake up-grade options
The last garage I took the car to swapped out the EBC pads for some standard FERODO ones as they said the EBC pads would not reach operating temperature, given that the car only weighs 650Kg, and they were correct - now that the replacement pads have bedded in the brakes are working a lot better. - ...

Re: Brake up-grade options
All - Update on this thread. - I have now upgraded the front calipers to the HiSpec 4 pots / 283mm vented/grooved discs / EBC Greenstuff pads. Replaced the rear brakes with what was already fitted [ Ford Granada Mk3 calipers / 247mm solids / EBC Greenstuff pads ] Replaced the brake fluid reservoir (...

Re: Drivers seat removal
I took the car to a local garage and they couldn't figure out how to remove the seat either - they recommended taking it back to the guy who built it. Anyway, I perceived and after digging around in the the only place I could, in the gap between the base and the upright section, I spotted wh...

Re: Drivers seat removal
Sorry, 2012 DAX Rush V8. It's booked into the garage now anyway - they can sort it out. It's probably just me being stupid - I'll let you know what they find.
