Thanks.
I don't want to take the heads off again so that could have been an expensive lesson.

Adjustable push rods.
I have a 3.5L V8 on which I have installed RR 3.9 heads. The heads are the intermediate type which have the rubber washers as valve seals and not the push on neoprene items. I had the heads skimmed to keep CR so that I could use composite gaskets. I am getting a rattle on start up (about 10 - 20 sec...

Unfortunately the options available for ZS needles are extremely limited. I built a modified 3.5L V8 for my LR 101 and ran in to difficulties in this department. I ended up modifying the damper pistons to take SU needles. My ZS175's are the older type with the mixture adjustment on the bottom of the...

Yup, I modified the carbs to take SU BBC needles as the options for ZS were extremely limited. I wasted time with Burlen as they had a very nice catalogue of needles but when I tried to order they couldn't actually provide more than a handful that were going to be too lean anyway. My next steps are ...

Engine dying randomly.
Gents, I'm having problems with my 101's engine. It has been rebuilt recently and is now set up as a 9.3 CR 3.5L with the original ZS175 CD carbs. The symptoms are that she will start like a champ, idles well and initially pulls well. I can rev her in the driveway and she runs well. After about 1/2 ...

Bleeding tappets for preload set up.
I am replacing my current heads with a new set modified with a skim cut to allow the use of composite gaskets. Having run the engine already I need to set up the lifter preload for the new heads. What is the accepted best way to empty the oil out of the lifters? Can I pull them out and just leave th...

Cylinder head measurement.
Gentlemen, I have bought a set of used heads to replace a set messed up by the machine shop. They look to be from a pre 93 RR engine which I presume would have used tin gaskets. I wish to have the heads skimmed to compensate for composite gaskets. My question is what datum surfaces and measurements ...

Valve guide seals
I have just obtained a set of V8 heads from eblag that alledgedly came of a '97 US spec Disco. They have the 3 hole accessory mounts that I need so things are good. While overhauling the heads I want to replace the inlet valve seals. My issue is that I had understood that valve guide seals were only...

Cylinder head overhaul.
After discovering that the machine shop had recut a couple of valve seats way too deep on my old '76 heads I have got a replacement set from a '97 Discovery. Other than the usual checks for flatness, lapping the valves and new valve stem seals are there any useful upgrades/checks that should be done...

I must confess that this was the first time I have attempted to set preloads. I followed the instructions oon the Rpi site and even bought a set of wire feeler gauges. I measured the gap in the tappet under the wire retainer thing and it all seemed good but then I cannot discount that I screwed up. ...

I agree they would be better but..... Adjustable push rods from V8 tuner = 135 GBP plus IIRC removing heads for machining of push rod holes. Shim kit = Free as they came with the build kit and no machining required. Bear in mind this is not a performance application. I just want the beastie to run a...

Valve tips measured.
I put a straight edge over the valve stem tips at the weekend and measured the variation over each valve. Well the #1 and #7 have two high valves and the rest of them are all about .025thou lower. I suppose that explains why I was not getting compression. All other things being equal, is this someth...
