Of course !

That would 'splash it all over' as the great Henry Cooper said !

On the subject of the thicker oil making the rattle louder, it is possible that the flow through the big end bearings is less and less splash is getting to the underside of the piston/pins. Regards Denis What exactly causes the 'splash'? I doubt Counter Balance weights actually dip into the oil do ...

What cam followers does TVR use for the 500? Standard landrover ones or hi-rev/anti pump ones? Do people still get the noise with different cam/followers? Seems strange that this seems to mainly effect the 500's so you'd think it would be somethink unique to that engine other wise there would be lo...

I think we should try and eliminate a few items from the equation in an attempt to find the cause of the noise. Lets start with the dizzy. Has anyone got the noise on a 500 engine that has been converted to crank trigger? If so then the dizzy is out of the equation and therefore forget the followin...

As to whether you can put new lifters on an old cam, there's a can of worms, I think that you can but I know that many others think that you can not! Interestingly, the Range Rover workshop manual say if a tappet is worn, replace it (dosnt mention replacing cam) I've replaced the odd noisy tappet b...

There is a cap on the lifters (also a clip of this being moved on the TVR post)... Can this float due to high pressure in the lifter as the valve train pressure comes off?.... I have been sitting at my desk with a pen in the lifter cap and wriggling it as John says, and it does sound just like that...

Hi wokingwedger. It would be helpful to have a good recording of the noise. I have listened to the one on Piston Heads but I could not distinguish the noise from the rest. Cheers Denis Yes I know what you mean. My noise is more distinct than that one, but I dont have a video recorder (or the knowle...

mgbv8 wrote:[As your issue seems rpm related. what oil pressure do you read at the problem rpm ??
I will check, but from memory its about 30 psi at idle and not discrenably any more at 1200 rpm when it happens.

It is much more noticable when the revs are on the way down (falling oil pressure)

The lifters (if working ok) should pump up solid at X rpm. The lifters dont maintain the pre load gap when running fast. This gives you the full lift from the cam at higher rpm. My Rhodes lifters pump up hard at around 3000 rpm. You can see this in a torque spike at that rpm on the dyno. The pre lo...

It is definately related directly to engine revs. No doubt about it !

What would you consider to be best 'slap in the middle' pre load ?

V8D say .040 to .100
RPI say .020 to 0.050

Hi I referre back to my earlier post, 1/ I would be certain what the problem is before you try to fix it 2/ I would make sure anything you do is within standard specifications for the engine. I would also add that It would be a very good idea to be sure you understand how somthing works before you ...
