A 3.9 is hotwire. According to CAR ELECTRONIC SERVICES (http://www.carelect.demon.co.uk/index.html) the 3.9 ECU part numbers are PRC 6999, 7081, 8702, 9010, 9061, 9611, 9515 and others. MTF94 is a Texaco product and is the standard lubricant for many MGRover vehicles including all manual MGF, ZS, ZT and all ZR (except the 1.4). Castrol SMX-S is actually better than MTF94 and is probably easier to get hold of – from Halfords for instance.

Try changing the oil to a fully synthetic 75W80 gear oil such as Redline MTL (expensive) or Castrol SMX-S (available from Halfords).
