Need advice on GEMS 4.0 rebuild for 98 Discovery (US model)

Hi, I have a 98 Discovery with a dead 4.0 GEMS motor (ran without oil, supposedly seized). I also have a factory new short block, missing camshaft, cam gear and chain. I am located in the US. I was told that I should use 4.6 cam with the 4.0 motor, is this correct? Will the car pass emissions testin...

Cranks usually break after developing fatigue cracks. Said cracks result from application of torsional forces. The 4.2 has longer stroke, consequently the momentum at the same RPM is higher. To put it in layman's terms, in a stroker motor stronger force is trying to twist your crankshaft. If you wan...

kokkolanpoika wrote:Why dont you go X-bolted block anyway? :D You can buy 2nd hand unit and fit new top-hat liners in it.. I think it is cheaper/better solution in long term? And you may get 4,6L engine then.. :D

ps: Do you live in Finland?
No, I live in the USA. I'll look around for a 4.6L block.

I am wondering if a combination of a dowel pins and ARP studs is good enough of a remedy for 3.9 block with non-enclosed main caps (circa 1992). I want to put a stroker crank (or may be stock 4.2) in it.

IMHO the registers on the side of the caps are a bad idea, especially when implemented the way they were in the non-enclosed RV8 main caps. The longer distance between the registers (as opposed to the difference between the centerlines of the dowel pin) means more play when the aluminum block expand...

It is a modern version of AMC360 engine. The junior member of the same family (AMC318) is very popular in the US, lots of Dodge "Magnum" v8 and v8 Jeep Grand Cherokees have this engine (minor differences - truck and Jeep versions have starter on different sides). Many parts fit both 5.2 an...

Questions about aluminum bore liners, main girdles and pins?

Hi All, IMHO the one of the ways of dealing with the issue of Rover V8 engine blocks cracking is aluminum liners. Some modern all-aluminum v8 engines actually have these cast-in. Even though the liner and the block are both made from aluminum, it's a different alloy. The liner is coated with Alusil ...

I am more or less in the same boat. I have a working 3.9 engine from Range Rover Classic (1992, 14CUX engine management, Ignition has distributor, old-school belt arrangement in the front). I can buy a 1996 Land Rover Discovery I for next to nothing, but the 4.0 engine threw a rod (GEMS engine manag...
